The AN-72 was developed in the 1970s by the Antonov Design Bureau as a multi-role military transport aircraft. Its unique design allows it to take off and land on short runways, even on unprepared surfaces, making it extremely useful for operations in poor infrastructure. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, many AN-72s were transferred or sold to various companies and states for civilian use.
AVIATRADE CONGO used the AN-72 for cargo operations in remote areas of Central Africa, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The aircraft was valuable because of its ability to carry large loads and operate in conditions of limited infrastructure, which is a typical problem for many countries in the region.
